At least 1,000 men, women and children were reportedly spotted landing on the south coast yesterday. If these numbers are correct, it would have shattered the previous daily record of 828, recorded on 21 August. But Home Office sources were today briefing that was an over-estimate and the likely official number will be about 740, merely the second highest daily total ever.'

So that's OK then?

Only one MP: Redcar Tory backbencher Jacob Young asked:

"not unreasonably, whether the Government could be doing more to stop the landings. The answer he got from Boris Johnson must rank as among the most complacent given by any prime minister from the despatch box in modern times.'

'The issue is, very sadly, our friends across the Channel in France are faced with a very difficult problem: large numbers of people who want to come to this country. We are doing everything we can to encourage the French to do the necessary and impede their passage,' said Johnson."

So the it's the French who are at fault, is that a fact ?

Pat, any coming from Syria have travelled practically the length of Europe to get to the English Channel. They reached safety when they landed in Greece or wherever they were dropped off. These are not destitute refugees. They are spending thousands on their tickets to the fabled land of milk and honey.

The buck stops with Johnson. End of (as one or two on here are fond of saying).
Who knew that our current crop of world-beating leaders would turn out to be cowardly, useless articles, completely unwilling to take hard decisions in stemming the flow of illegal immigration from across the sea for fear of being talked about on Radio 4?

'We did' shout most people.
this is an invasion, we should treat it as one, stop arising about with all the maritime BS and tow the boats back to France and destroy the boats. We'd only have to do it a few times then they'd not bother. end of.
No, they are not doing enough and I can't for the life of me think why!!
The French aren’t doing their bit - and that should surprise no one. Every migrant leaving France means one less problem for the French. However, giving these people safe passage to our shores is madness and serves only to encourage more to attempt the crossing. The boats must be towed back to France - every single one of them.

On this issue we have a useless government allied by a useless opposition;
"Labour is altogether silent on this issue – hamstrung by the 'no borders' demands of its activist base – despite polls showing it is a key concern of the voters it needs to win from the Tories if it is ever to be returned to power."

To many observers it seems as if Britain is getting close to there being a right for anyone from any poor country to arrive illegally on its shores and tap into the resources of the British public from day one, with negligible risk of removal. No welfare state can survive long-term under such a scenario.

The only person who would appear to be able to deal with this crisis with vigour, has unfortunately, no authority to do so ..... yes, & his first name is Nigel.

Khandro. What would/ could Nigel ‘ do ‘ ?
Pritti hopeless has at least decided to hold back some if not all of the £54 million she was going to give the French for their "assistance" in trying to prevent these crossings.

anne ; Change the law for start;
A much stricter regime is called for. And Ms Patel is pretty useless. But France has a lot to Answer for and, let's face it, they are doing everything they can to spite us. I'm so glad we left the EU.
I feel so sorry for all those misguided people who voted Brexit , thinking it would stop immigration,.... not their fault.
Blatantly obvious that theFrench are not doing their bit
The numbers prove that
Such massive increases can only mean one thing and that is that someone is not doing their job on the other side
You do not have to be a politician to see that
If we were a nation with a long history of seafaring and repelling invaders then this kerfuffle would be rightly be seen as an absolute shambolic disgrace.
Yes Douglas, but times have changed and back in the day there was little respect for human lives being lost. And families with children are involved. Not an easy situation. It's not good enough to turn them round back to France. I don't know if there is any way to get round the French situation. Not an easy country to deal with because as nations we hate each other and Macron wants supremity over Europe and is bitter about Brexit!

pat2604 // It's not good enough to turn them round back to France.//

Why not ? That is exactly what is being done (turning people away) in many countries the world over.
Just yesterday 1,000 that is 1,000 to be fed & housed every day along along with the thousands upon thousands already in the UK & contributing nothing, many living in hotels accommodation at an exorbitant cost to the country (i.e. you)

Can the welfare State support this & can it even survive it, how far are you prepared to be so complacent ?

Boris will have to break every manifesto pledge he made . He will have to hike every sort of tax he can think of, to feed ,house, and support these immigrants be them legal , illegal or refugees.
I'm far from complacent Khandro. I said it's not easy to send boats back. If children are on board or genuine asylum seekers. If you and your family were in a similar situation what would you be doing? I wouldn't want to live in a country that had no compassion. We have to get tougher and also tougher with France. I have no idea how, but I don't condone turning boats back!
Genuine refugees will be thankful to reach any country in Europe. The people coming from the safety of France are economic migrants. Why allow unwarranted compassion to influence any practical decision?
Only a week ago people were worrying that they were going to have to pay increased N.I. etc. to pay for social care. What is going to happen in the future when all the immigrants reach old age. They won't have paid even the minimum contributions needed for retirement pensions . Britain is going to be in dire straits in a few years time. France should be cracking down on the people smugglers .
