Following the death of King Harold (Godwinson) at the battle of Hastings the next King of England was not William I but Edgar, we has never crowned but was king for 64 Days, elected by the Witen (Witenagemot) who had also elected King Harold following the death of Edward the Confessor with no clear heir.

//Really TTT!! Just back and already you are flooding the site with load of nonsense.// Then don't read it. As someone who was born and bred in Hastings, 1066 is of major interest to me. More so than the continued bleating about Haggis breeding season or a nation Irn Bru shortage (or whatever the latest whinge north of the border may be)

Really TTT!! Just back and already you are flooding the site with load of nonsense. Who cares what happened in 1066? This bit of tosh certainly has nothing to do with the Scots, Irish or Welsh on the site.
Lighten Braveheart...you're in chatterbank.

It's well known by AB members that TTT is well behind the times with his views but even I hadn't realised that he's nearly a millennium behind everyone else!

Historians?
One thing is for sure

Somebody had an eye on the future !
Did you know that King Harold had a iPad?
If we're doing obscure facts here . . .

The most recent invasion of mainland Britain was in 1797 (by France, at Fishguard in Wales).

The most recent invasion of England was in 1778 (by America, at Whitehaven in Cumbria).
Thanks TTT. An interesting fact little known.
Those that do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.
Some people DO care about what happened in our past.
It’s what made us who we are.

maggie this is CB and I started my daily "did you know " thread before I got jarred. Feel free to ignore if you are impervious to knowledge.
Edgar Atheling was born in Hungary after his father Edward Atheling was exiled there for his safety after the Viking invasion in 1057 led by Cnut(not a typo). He returned to England aged 5 and after William the concreter(loved building did the Normans) invaded, sought refuge in Scotland, in 1068. When William duly marched into Scotland he was on the run again and led campaigns agains the Normans until is death in 1125. Whilst in Scotland his sister Margaret married Malcolm III and became known as the Pearl of Scotland. Since then the Scots have considered it to be a virtue to be as tight as clams.
