I am looking to buy a mobile home. The ones in the area I am interested in are heated by propane gas which does not appeal to me, so I am considering oil. This means having a tank installed and the radiators etc., question is (a) is this cheaper in the long term for heating as opposed to gas cylinders and (b) would I need special permission to have a tank installed somewhere in the garden?

Before you do anything you will have to check the Site Rules to see if they allow oil tanks. Oil is a lot cheaper in the long or short term than gas cylinders. There would be a lot of disruption and cost in fitting radiators and boiler though. you would not need a tank with a combination boiler.

ok I understand and I will contact the local town authorities concerning using oil.

My friend had it installed (she was electric heating) and she said it worked out cheaper. I would be moving 12 miles to a different town and I do need to consider long term economical heating. I appreciate the cost involved and will allow for that, but I guess it is down to the local authorities if they will permit this type of heating. Thanks for your reply Toureman as I now know what to check out next.

An oil combination boiler would be best as oil is far cheaper than LPG with less restrictions on siting the tank. You can install what heating you like but it must comply with building regulations. Your OFTEC installer will advise you on the legalities of the type and siting of the oil tank but although there are minimum distances etc., generally with a mobile home it is best to site it as far as away as possible in case of fire.
