Bearing in mind it's weight, if you hung the Earth on a metal chain, how big would the links have to be to hold it?

Where is this hook that you are going to hang it on?

What a strange question!?!

It occured to me in the night. A Eureka moment.

It's not the 'wieght' of the Earth that's the problem. It's more.. What to connect it to?

If you're using the Sun as your 'gravity' then (without centrefuge) a large chain may stop the Earth being pulled towards the Sun. But not the Sun being pulled towards the Earth.

Really. When you think about it.. If you had a big enough chain attached to our planet and extending straight out to a fixed point. The Earth would probably pull itself along it, gathering speed, until it impacted at the point of anchorage.

I simply mean, if you took an 'object' (i.e. the Earth) and hung it on a metal chain. How big would the links need to be to hold it, bearing in mind however heavy the Earth is?

:o)

In theory, you could use one long link. Your problem would be what to make the link out of to hold such a weight.
The Earth is in free fall around the Sun and weights nothing. If it did than it would fall into the Sun. This aint no joke!
What are you, a clamper?

Assuming the earth were being pulled by some gravitational field = 9.81 m/s2, and the links were made from mild steel with a yield strenght of say 340 MPa, then the links would have to have totla load bearing area of 1.72x10 to the power of 17 m2. That would mean each side of the link would have a radius of 160000 km.

well it would have to be a little smaller than the earth that way it wouldnt fall through and to be farly honest...rele .rele big :D lol i think i answered it right
