If you're using the Sun as your 'gravity' then (without centrefuge) a large chain may stop the Earth being pulled towards the Sun. But not the Sun being pulled towards the Earth.
Really. When you think about it.. If you had a big enough chain attached to our planet and extending straight out to a fixed point. The Earth would probably pull itself along it, gathering speed, until it impacted at the point of anchorage.
Assuming the earth were being pulled by some gravitational field = 9.81 m/s2, and the links were made from mild steel with a yield strenght of say 340 MPa, then the links would have to have totla load bearing area of 1.72x10 to the power of 17 m2. That would mean each side of the link would have a radius of 160000 km.
