I'm not sure why I don't know this but what was the official explanation as to why, when they take pictures a film in space you can't see the stars in the back ground

with a slower exposure time you would be able to see the stars. Photography follows pretty much the same rules wherever you are.

if you take a picture of stars using a digital, you wil have to use an ultra high reoloution, as the stars are "tiny" , when viewed from earth. the higher the resolution, the more sars you will be able to see. if using a normal camers, you should try and prolong the exposoure time, as this works by letting in the stars small light ammounts.
