I have seen a demonstration of a simple electrolytic set-up to clean tarnished silver jewellery. It involved an aluminium foil (pie dish) container and a solution (possibly washing soda). A battery is then connected, one terminal to the foil and the other to the silver. Does anyone have any more precise details? Many thanks in advance

The thing I do is line the sink with silver foil. Sprinkle on top soda crystals and add warm water. You will see bubbles . Then add your silver and leave for a few mins and it will be cleaned. No battery required.
Anything aluminium will work just make sure all the items are touching this whether it is aluminium foil or a saucepan lid . Dissolve the soda crystals in warm water and watch the tarnish vanish like magic. You don't need a battery
There's an amazing plate called a Qwiksilver that you put into a bowl with a handful of soda, add boiling water, dip your silver in & it comes out shiny. Even better than aluminium foil, it cleans gold & brass too. I bought one having seen it demonstrated (at a car show) and have since bought loads for presents as they're so good, and so easy to post!
