Bob Newhart exaggerates then.

You don't need an infinite number of monkeys to reproduce Shakespeare.

The number you need is very big ... but it's not infinite.

joggerjayne, you are being annoyingly pedantic!

Bob Newhart didn't say you'd actually NEED an infinite number of monkeys, he only posited that it would make it more likely that if there was an infinite number, it would speed up the process and make it more likely that they'd turn out the entire works of Shakespeare.

If you had merely a very large number of monkeys, it could take longer than the universe is likely to exist to do this.

By the way, if you've not heard of the wonderful Mr Newhart, check out the many CD compilations of his hilarious early 60s sketches of one-sided conversations. Your laughter mechanism will love you for ever. Or infinity, whichever is the greater:-))) You can probably find sound samples in many places on the internet. I recommend The Driving Instructor, The Cruise of the USS Codfish, Introducing Tobacco to Civilisation, Ledge Psychology and Bomb Disposal Expert. Pure genius.
Pedantic? Oh, sorry.

btw ...

Q. Who lead the Pedants Revolt?

A. 'Which' Tyler.

Erm, it's meant to be funny.
