I've no idea where to put this so I thought i'd try here.

I've just bought a new (ish) car and I'm trying to work out how many miles it is doing to the gallon(miles to the litre means nothing to me). Being useless at maths I was hopeing someone could help me out.

I filled the tank to the brim, then drove 198 miles I then put in 24.47 litres of petrol which filled the tank again.

I think thats all thats needed.

Thank you

Just use google converter. I recall a gallon is 4.5 litres approx.. So 24.47 litres is 27.47/4.5 gallons.
198 miles divided by teh result gives mpg.
However it's not an exact calculation as it assumes car was equally full each time you filled it
Hardly the right equation.

If 1 gallon approx = 4.5 litres

then if you put in 45 litres of petrol it would be equal to 10 gallons.
>"Hardly the right equation"

Er, what's wrong with the equation, rov1200
My equation said 24.47 litres to be 24.47/4.5= 5.44 gallons

That's in line with your result that 10 gallons = 45 litres
36.7 mpg
Multiply litres by 0.22 to get number of gallons.
..and the result (using exact figure of 4.55 litres=1 gallon) is 36.8mpg
You can use this online calculator:

To convert litres to gallons, divide the litres by five and add 10% to the answer.
For the pedants amongst us: 1 gallon = 4.54609 litres
