Sorry, not an answer to your question, but I'm laughing at NASA putting "Observatory's" in their press release.
Chuck, The apostrophe is correct if that's what you are laughing at.
Or is it the idea of being able to 'see' X-rays?
Observatories
Having re-read it, yes Gen2, you are correct, they are denoting possession of the discovery to the Observatory.

My Apologies.
What sort of exceptional x-ray source would be worth a press conference?

I'm guessing it might be something exceptionally close especially as there's a reference to "our cosmic neighbourhood"

But it's a wild guess - have to wait and see
a black hole
Could it be the celestial teapot?
A nearby black hole would certainly fit the bill biblebub

Of course "nearby" is a loose term in astronomy!
Or the most direct evidence of their existence.
the Flying Spaghetti Monster?
they might have proved Nemesis exists.

I'm actually interested now to know what it is, I hope it's not NASA over hype.
You're way off track everyone, it's Father Christmas.
NASA already track Santa every Christmas, don't they? Don't tell me they've found him in the wrong solar system
Probably a sewage bomb from a passing Vulcan ship. You'd have though they would know how to recycle.
Well they have just created another big bang in the laboratory at the LHC.
It wouldn't be anything to do with this, would it?

Nice post Naomi, fascinating stuff quite beyond my limited brain. Monday, you say, Daisho?
