To help it walk around the place.
Since all species either spin or run to catch prey, then evolution will have given a head start to those who do both more efficiently - so the eight-;egged variety has survived, the rest haven't.
In fact a spider has 48 "knees". That is six joints on each leg. This allows it to move in any direction quickly.
"Cloned".....genius.

Mine hasn't.

To make up for the lack of arms?
If it had 7 it would walk around in circles. 
To frighten the c**p out of me!
