Some theorists believe there are parallel universes.

Not sure what you mean by "how does it work".
they have found 'evidence' one may exist apparently

Oh, come on ...

In what parallel universe would there be a ... err ... parallel ...

... oh, never mind.
Well, if there is no AB in a such a universe then I do not want to go there. AnswerBank is the best site in this universe, bar none.

Hope you all agree with me!

A large area of empty space is not evidence for a parallel Universe and I'm certainly not convinced it is "impossible to explain with current theories".

There's a kind of half truth here in that if you start with a mathematical model of an expanding universe you should see a much more uniform distribution but that's more likely to be a lack of detail in our understanding in the physics of the early Universe.

In terms of parallel Universes there are several types.

Firstly there's the parallel Universe suggested as an interpretation to Quantum Mechanics.

Secondly there's the parallel Universe suggested to explain why the physics in our Universe is so suited for life.

Thirdly there's the additional physical dimensions requied to explain things like String theory and the weakness of gravity and all good stuff like that.

Any number of these may be correct or none - there's yet to be really strong predictions from any of these that has a realistic chance of being observed.

Certainly though I think this is someone getting a bit overexcited - I doubt you'll find any serious Scientists citing this as proof

PS - love the use of the get out of gaol phrase "at first glance" in the link.

when you ask what do i mean by "how does it work"

what i mean is if "i" drop a cup or sneeze or whatever i this universe

am "i" supposed to do exactley the she same in the P / U ??

it just sound too crazy to even be remotley true!!
That's because it isn't true. Parallel just means next to, as in I am stood next to someone. There isn't a duplicate of you in it.
Well square bear that depends what type of Universe you're talking about.

It is intended in the quantum mechanical parallel worlds interpretation.

Parallel here is a metaphorical parallel meaning alongside in a sense that it is real but disconnected from the dimensions and reality that we experience
Very easy to answer....No.
Don't ask me kopend I just started watching that film "The Time Machine", and then I realised I'd seen it before.... next Thursday.
In MHO I think there's many many different polyverses. It was only recently, when someone invented the microscope did we realise that there were in fact different forms of life we weren't aware of because we couldn't see them. Today there's many forms of energy we do recognise but then again many we don't. Light, heat, sound we're familiar with but the other forms only become apparent when we own the apparatus to transduce the energies into recognisable ones - mobile phones, television and radio signals, satellite signals, all around us without us being aware of them. We live in a carbon-based world but other forms of life may consist of silicon-based material and states of matter we're yet to discover. Our idea of Heaven may well prove to be one of the polyverses where we pass from one state of matter into another, only recognising it as such when we're part of it.
AB IS the parallel universe.
Quantum mechnics has many interpretations, The Copenhagen interpretation being one championed by Niels Bohr and until around the seventies / eighties the most widely accepted. However there is also the Many Worlds interpretation that has been gaining much ground in the last couple of decades. This interpretation suggests that parallel universes are constantly being created by multiple outcomes of individual quantum events. In essence, if during a step in the ppp chain in the sun a photon can either be emitted or not emitted then the Many Worlds interpretation says that both happen but that our universe only see's one the other is observed in a parallel universe which came into being at the instant of the interaction. In which case there would in deed be many copies of you "out" there, an almost infinite amount in fact.
I had to smile on that Horizon program the other night with the Cosmologist claiming on the one hand that people were too conservative in their thinking to accept many worlds and then in almost the same beath claiming many worlds was the only interpretation that "made sense".

Which makes the most sense - that things can be in different places at the same time or that the Universe is continuously splitting and replicating untold trillions of times a second.

You pays your money you takes your choice.

But if you takes your choice in QM based on what "makes sense" you're doomed!
When you stop to consider that within the reference frame of light speed there's no distinction between location or an instant and eternity it all makes perfect sense.

To answer your 3 questions.
1. No.
2. Irrelevant(see answer 1).
3. Correct.
i have read that those crazy chaps have come up with a quantum computer, well a little one anyway, that uses the uncertainity principal to to mean that a 'bit' can be 1 and 0 at the same time. this theoretically allows like trillions of calculation possible at the same time with a minimalnumber of quantum bits. in fact more than should be possible wit the size of the universe. sooooo......the explination is many worlds or parrallel universes, inwhich the calcs are also performed. Then as JTP says there are parralles needed to help explain why gravity appears so weak and where the strings vibrate or something. All great theoretical physics which is just lovely. I really hpe we hang around long enough to learn more like a few tousand years at least.
Kopend, I could guess your next question - Is there another 'you' in that parallel universe?
I am at a loss to understand why people cite the anthropic principle as positive evidence favouring a notional multiverse.
