I take one of these every day: http://www.vitabiotic...Osteocare/tablet.aspx

as I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis in my spine at the age of 42. I have been readiing lately about taking calcium supplements are bad for your arteries and could cause them to fur up, leading to heart attacks etc.

Then I read another article that says, if you combine the calcium with magnesium then this balances it out. The Osteocare do have magnesium in them.

I am not a cheese eater or any other diary products - I have soya milk on my porridge and in my coffee.

Should I be concerned ?

Den......the only reputable study that I have seen linking high intakes of calcium through calcium supplements was from a unit in New Zealand.

many questions regarding calcium, cholesterol , atheroma and heart disease still unanswered in my opinion and discussing them on a no scientific site like AB might be difficult.

My opinion.....if you have an adequate diet in vegetables and fruit then the taking of calcium supplements for Osteoporosis should not increase your chances of heart attacks.

the prof or lazygun will give you a more scientific answer.
Den ...another point is that patients with Osteoporosis often start with lower blood Calcium levels, so taking calcium supplements only brings the calcium levels in the blood to normal. This is not like someone with normal blood calcium levels taking supplements.....for...........a fad or the vogue or the fashion.

Sqad - I think my over active thyroid caused the Osteoporosis - even though it was managed at the time with Carbimazole. I am angry that I was never made aware about the over activity of the thyroid until it was discovered when I was 42. Had I know, I would have increased my calcium intake much sooner.

I have never been big on diary foods, and hated milk as a child.

oops - that should read: I am angry that I was never made aware that overactivity of the thyroid could cause thinning bones.
Den....that is "water under the bridge" my love.
Question Author
I know Sqad, but it still makes me angry.
Den...I know! I know!
