Christmas Meat Dilemma

Went to order my turkey crown and ham joint this week from my favourite butchers only to discover that what cost less than £50 last year was going to cost nearer £100 this year. Any supermarket recommendations for turkey crowns (fresh or frozen) to feed 8 - 10 and ham joints to feed 12? I have all the brochures and prices don't vary that much but I am not spending £100. The turkey doesn't have to be fab but the ham has to be wonderful (I want an uncooked, off the bone type - don't know the actual name for it). Thank you.

Go to Morrisons, sher, as chris says - they have in-house butchers, their meat is good and reasonable.
Sherr, if supermarket ones are not big enough you could always buy two, they'll also cook quicker than one huge one.
if you live off chickens, I wouldn't go down the turkey route either then. There isn't (to me anyway) THAT much difference between the 2.

Nice joint of beef instead?

Boo, I've only just got himself to agree to a turkey crown rather than a whole turkey (I would ruin beef). I'm not that bothered about the turkey thing, just have to get the right ham.
Again, I agree with B00.

Last time I did xmas dinner I did duck, beef and chicken.
we went to a christmas dinner last night - they served turkey (which was lovely), beef, and pork.
ummmm leave the ducks alone :)
Every year I have a friend who comes up from the West Country (she`s just gone home today) Anyway, her family are farmers with a couple of thousand sheep and cattle (but no pigs). So she knows about meat. Last year when she was here she went to the local market (Kempton) and bought a horseshoe ham for half the price of the butcher/supermarket. I was a bit dubious about buying meat from a market but she said it was really good. Maybe you could research a decent butcher at the local market and get the ham from there.
Blue, you are very lucky if you have a choice of butcher!
I don't eat white ducks, ducksie :-)
you should try spiced beef for a change, it's gorgeous (google it)
that's good to know ummmmm :)

Got a ginormous ham at Morrisons (thanks Buenchico - usually avoid the place like the plague). Very pleased with it.
Why not try a vegetarian Christmas - if money is an issue it will be much, much cheaper than loads of meat.
we got ours from icelands everyone (13 people) said it was glorious .i'm definitely going to buy from there this .
lol...a vegetarian Christmas for a family of meat eaters. I bet that would go down a treat!
I do not see the appeal of crowns. My sister insists on getting them. It's like you tell the butcher you actually want them to remove the tastier bits, the great bits you can hold on to and bite into, so they can sell them separately, and just leave you the slicing bits that one can get in a frozen dinner any time of year. Wow ! Celebration time or what ?
Could'nt agree with you more Old Geezer.Must have legs and thighs and I always get carvers treat.the Parsons nose.

Money is not an issue but I am not going to spend more than I have to - only an idiot would spend £60 for something they can get for £30.

We buy a turkey crown as I can't stand having a whole turkey just hanging around, it's always too big for the fridge and I worry that I will end up giving someone food poisoning. My children don't eat meat off the bone so it's not a big deal (himself likes the turkey crown as their is no waste).
You go with what your family enjoys, for us (as a family) it was always Rib of Beef - now there is just me I am fancying a nice Fillet Steak this year.
