Went to order my turkey crown and ham joint this week from my favourite butchers only to discover that what cost less than £50 last year was going to cost nearer £100 this year. Any supermarket recommendations for turkey crowns (fresh or frozen) to feed 8 - 10 and ham joints to feed 12? I have all the brochures and prices don't vary that much but I am not spending £100. The turkey doesn't have to be fab but the ham has to be wonderful (I want an uncooked, off the bone type - don't know the actual name for it). Thank you.

I've found that the butchery departments of Morrisons (close to the station in Hereford for you) are better than most other supermarkets. Ask them what they can offer you.

All of our local Morrisons have had fantastic offers on all meat and poultry for the past few years during the season of goodwill.

Sherr, why don't you try Dukeshill for your ham? They do lovely ham and you can have it cooked and ready to serve or uncooked. I will admit they are not the cheapest, their Boxing Day ham is £48 but it is cooked, quite a big piece too, and ready to serve. They do have a website but as usual I don't have it to hand. Give the site a peek, you can have all sorts of ham, bacon, sausages
puddings and cheeses they also have a range of pickles and so forth to accompany cold cuts.

Cheers all, will have a look about (was hoping to avoid having to do any actual shopping but if needs must). Not so concerned about the turkey but finding a ginormous piece of ham (the sort I want) seems to be the tricky part.

My goodness that's an awful price for a bit of bird, have you a big patch of land, rear your own turkey next year, that's extortion from the butchers, no bird's worth that and if i did pay it I'd charge per head each guest for their dinner...I know, I'm a scrooge. but keep to the turkey, leave ducks alone ;)

This is just to feed my family (himself and the sproglets). Have a plan - get frozen turkey crown and put all my (half-arsed) effort into finding the perfect ham (my favourite).

I'm having the Boxing day ham at £48 it is a bit big for us but it lasts a long time and I can always freeze it. The ham from there is a bit on the dear side but it is so good - I always buy ham from them now despite the fact that I live in an area where it is possible to source some fabulous produce.

I was going to rear some turkeys to sell for Xmas, I was advised not to bother as there is no money in it.

So I'm not surprised they are so expensive, they appear to be very expensive to rear.

I may think about it again next year just to see how it works out.

Mine like the turkey crown but we all love the ham. I am not anti getting it from a supermarket just need a piece big enough. Going to hit the bacon stalls in the indoor market, they might do a deal on a big piece. The butcher I was going to use is having a laugh, seems to have doubled his prices from last year - cheaper to buy it from M & S.
