I notice a lot of celebrities prefer platinum engagement/wedding rings. I'm shopping for an engagement ring for my girlfriend and don't want to just follow a trend, but I'm thinking there has to be some real benefits to going for platinum. Anyone know?

''I'm thinking there has to be some real benefits to going for platinum.''

Yep... wave next years holiday goodbye ;-)
Platinum is more expensive than gold and the silver color is more fashionable.
It's just more modern, if not platinum, then white gold is nice, no one would know it's not Platinum.
Our wedding rings are platinum - we had them made by a jeweller.

My engagement ring was bought in Dubai and the diamond is set in platinum so I had to have a matching wedding band.

Most importantly does your girlfriend prefer the colour or yellow gold?
Platinum was very popular before the war (or so my nanny is telling me) but due to the war they stopped making them as they used it in armaents.

Lots of Elvis fans have platinum rings as Elvis bought one for his wife.

mr g my nanny says go for it - because it has a better resistance to wear - if it scratches the platinum just moves whereas with gold it is actually lost and it is also hypoallergenic. Beware as there are different qualities - the highest being 950 - which means it's 95% platinum .

She's just said that the brilliant white shows off a diamond better than anything else.

(her granddad and dad were jewellers)

Err.....yes YOU WOULD! Im pretty sure they're buying it for themselves velvetee and not for other people.
You so can tell the difference between white gold and platinum
Yes thicko I CAN,if i wear silver ILL KNOW ITS SILVER,if i wear white gold,ILL KNOW ITS WHITE GOLD! My jewellry is platinum and i feel on top of the world wearing it,as well as designer clothes and limited edition trainers and timberland boots,it seems that you chicks are happy with fake jewellry, fake perfumes and fake labels,so long as "NO ONE KNOWS!' HAHA! Fake @$$ beaches,go and run to the social security office cath and collect your welfare check!
I work BadMongler and so does my hubby - he's a partner in a business so why would I go to the "social Security Office and get my welfare chq?"

How old are you welfare - Social Security Office - you're either a bit dated or American

Mongler an apt name ????
You both work??? AT YOUR AGE???? Oh both of you done sh!t in school,.......oh well, the aged need to feel wanted i suppose......
mr g I hope you find a lovely ring for your girlfriend.

I'm sure she'll love whatever you choose - it's the meaning behind the ring that counts.

Dont listen to cath,if her husband gave her an organic bamboo engagement ring and started lying about its the meaning that counts,he'd be on a sex ban,be cheated or have to suffer a lifetime of being called mr cheap to everyone she knows, listen mr g,from one player to another, buy the best you can afford, make sure its platinum and diamond and be seen as a real man and reap the benefits if you know what i mean!
mr.g - look at Hello/OK mags they wear bling. I prefer bling - the bigger the crystal the better. It's cheaper too.

If it must be real diamonds then buy 2nd hand the biggest affordable.

Platinum is a more pure and precious metal than, for example White Gold. It is harder and therefore will last longer. Also if you are buying a ring with a stone, i.e. a diamond ring, the stone will be held more safely in a ring made from platinum as the claws that hold the stone will be stronger and therefore less likely to break. White gold is yellow gold mixed with other metals and is naturally a bronze grey colour. It is coated with Rhodium plating to make it appear whiter and after wearing, over time, the plating comes off gradually and the natural grey/bronze colour shows through. Platinum is the best bet for these reasons, though more expensive, is well worth the extra cost.
