I have an old leather jacket which has a very musty smell. This puts me off wearing it - and I wondered if there are any ways (apart from Fabreze) to kill the smell and freshen it a bit

Musty odours are often caused by a very fine, almost invisible layer of surface dust (or mould). By adding a freshner such as febreeze, u will only damage the skin, as it a natural living material (much like our own skin). You will really need to get it dry cleaned.

Try spraying a fine mist of lavender water (buy in chemist) on the lining (not on the leather, obv.) and hang it in your airing cupboard or on the washing line for a few hours. Cedar is also a good natural freshener and also helps keeps moths away. You can buy various cedar products from John Lewis and most haberdasheries.
