Waitrose is the food part of John Lewis, so it's just a little bit 'posh', but not very.
There are stores all across the country:

When you find one, I recommend heading straight for the deli counter!

Agree on Waitrose for food but love some of the smaller independents as to butchers/cheese/bakeries/farm shops.....as for wine used to love Odd Bins but we have a brilliant interesting vino shop down here.
Of recent experience, I loved the farm shop/vino/flower outlets just off the M3 at Hook - well worth a visit if any of you live up that way......

gran - it's a proper day out isn't it? I always find that its a place where time has no meaning, you never know if it's going to be dark by the time you make it out!! Kids love it too which is a bonus!! They used to like going to the play area and then having lunch - now they are happy to wander round .........and then have lunch!!!
Love Costco too.

If, unusually, there's someone behind the counter when you walk in, you'll immediately be offered a cup of coffee. (If not, look for the sign saying 'For attention, bang can with stick'. Pick up the said stick and wallop the battered old oil can with it. When someone comes, ask if the kettle's on!).
Click the 'About Us' link from that web page, to meet the guy who's behind the (decidedly odd, but totally wonderful) bookshop.

I haven't got any because to me they are all pricey.
Sorry folks, it's a grumpy old man here who can remember the days when a packet of 20cigarettes could be purchased for a florin and a pint of beer for a shilling.
(10p & 5p)
Perhaps it's time for me to quit smoking......I have given-up going to the pub because of the smoking ban. Hope the Ed doesn't ban smokers on AB.:-)
