I would not get him a smartphone unless he has a play with it first.

Also do you plan to buy him JUST a phone, or a phone with a contract?

A phone on it's own can be VERY expensive. An iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S3 can be hundreds of pounds unless you take out a phone contract.

And if he already has a phone contract he may be able to upgrade to a smartphone with...

Best phone I've ever had is the Blackberry ( in my case Curve 8520) because the layout & workings are very much computer orientated & I find a lot of smartphones difficult to understand & work out.

thanks
I love my blackberry torch.
Maybe a new Windows Phone? It can be as simple as you'd like it to be.
iphone. I am an idiot and I can use one. If you get it from the Apple shop, they speak idiot and will set it up for you.
If I were buying a smartphone "from scratch", I would get some informed, impartial advice. Look at which.co.uk, type "smartphones" into the "search box" and find the five best budget phones from which you can choose.
i suppose it depends what he is going to use it for - if it is just phonecalls/text, there is not point in getting a smartphone. If he is going to browse the internet, it's going to be expensive to buy data on pay and go
iPhone all the way!! So easy to use. There are no menus just tap on what you need. Blackberrys are nothing compared to the iPhone. I have to set new blackberrys up every year for work and they are more difficult to set up for email cos you have to make sure your provider has put you on the correct blackberry service

Seriously if he doesn't know much about smart phones. Get an iPhone. The touchscreen and response is second to none.

And if he already has a phone contract he may be able to upgrade to a smartphone with the same company and keep his number.

Also as has been said, what is he going to use a smartphone for. If only for calls and text he does not need a smartphone, because the contract for a smartphone can work out at hundreds of pounds over 2 years.

All in all I would not get him one as a surprise as you may buy it and find he does not like it. If he goes in a shop with you he can play around with it to see if he likes it before you buy it.
have to agree with VHG. I thought i'd like an i ohone till hubby got one and i realised i HATED touchscreen
^ Quick everybody, new phone on the market, I'm up for bednobs' i ohone, can anyone find it on google/eBay?
Poor old Bedpost, one slip and you're done for.
Blackberry's are the easiest phones. I started with a Blackberry Curve, easy to navigate, easy to use the phone and text. If he doesn't want it for Facebook, Twitter and all the other networking Apps, that's not a problem either as he can 'hide' those icons :o)

iphones aren't that easy AND they have loads of Apps which you said you're hubby wasn't interested in.
I hate the tiny keys on a Blackberry. Definitely get him to try a few out first.
