True eiderdowns are filled with the soft feathers of the eider duck. The bird lines its nest with them. When the nests are abandoned after use, people harvest the feathers.
Plucking a live bird of any kind is a little difficult !

Thanks for the replies. Sounds as if some companies do live pluck one must research the product. When someone told me the birds were live plucked I didn't believe her and felt quite sick.
Aargh, I'd not heard about live plucking - that's revolting. At the least the birds survive, unlike the evil trade in raccoon dog skinning alive in China, for the fashion trade. That haunted me for months (and still does).
