I have used Bold non-bio jel for some time, but think I'll give Aldi's non-bio tablets a try as I read that jel is not best for your washing machine.
Liquid capsules always seem to leave slime on my clothes so I'll never use them again. I use either Ariel or Persil liquid and put a cap full of Vanish in with my whites.
I used to use non-bio for Little Tiggs' clothes but I wash everything together now with bio.
I remember a 'New Scientist' magazine article from years ago that concluded that bashing cotton clothing on a rock in a river proved to be as good a way of cleaning clothes as any more modern method. (The article also expressed surprise at how well cotton stood up to such treatment).
To answer the original question, factually: (with thanks to Which? test and report July 2013): Biological powders wash better than any other detergent (tablets, gel, liquids etc). The best performers are Ariel Actilift Bio ( around 34p per wash), Persil Bio (22p) and Aldi's Almat Stain-lift Bio (only 10p per wash). It's another no-brainer, as they say.
....oh, and should have said that using products designed for "coloured items" all the time isn't doing your lighter (and white) items - or your machine - any favours. These products don't contain any bleaching-agents and can cause problems (smells, moulds) in your machine.

I always use Bold powder as I itch with anything else. I also use colour catcher sheets with my lighter coloured wash.
I am not sure about the washing detergent, I have tried many but still end up coming back to Persil or Ariel. You note that you are trying to fight a BO problem on your sons clothes, this might seem odd but have you tried White Vinegar, you spray the armpit area, leave for ten minutes and wash as normal, you can also use it in place of Fabric Conditioner, not only is it cheaper but your towels will thank you as they come out super soft and it helps to keep your machine clean, works for me and you have nothing to loose....... assuming you have not tried this already.

Worzel - no I have not tried vinegar which is strange as I use a lot of white vinegar around the house so I shall give that a go
I don't usually use conditioner as I was led to believe it does more harm than good

tamaris

I use Asda's own smart price ( about £2.80 for a huge box) and soda crystals and conditioner
