Why Can't You Buy Two Airline Seats?

My daughter is getting married up here in Northumberland, in February. Ideally they want to fly up here from, Southampton. She has been told that the only way she can bring her wedding dress is either, shove it in the overhead lockers, (not happening) or put it in the hold, (also not happening).


I said why not buy an extra seat for it. She rang Flybe and was told that she wasn't allowed to do this.

Anyone have any idea why they wouldn't sell her a second seat, for her dress.

I've heard of musicians getting a second seat for a valuable musical instrument. Why not a wedding dress?

No they will have to drive up so its no biggy. Just wondered if anyone knew why they won't sell her two seats.

Factor, I think it is fair to say that is the over head locker and hold are not acceptable when the bride is present the option of a courier will be even less attractive!

I think even Ryanair would allow that. They allow you to book for instruments.

Security, they have to have a checkable name for each seat booked.
Has she tried booking 2 seats in her own name not mentioning the dress?

I think she's going to try that, Eddie. If not, they will just drive up. I just thought it was odd.

It is probably because it would not be a secured piece of baggage. As they always tell you to secure your belongings in the overhead locker or under the seat in front, and all passengers have seatbelts. Everything has to be secured for take off or landing so they would not allow her dress carrier to be loose on a seat. My sister in law got married abroad and put her dress in its carrier in the overhead locker, the cabin crew made sure that it wasn't crushed. Also the bridal shop may be able to pack it to fit in a locker without crushing the dress.

My daughters wedding dress was sent from Italy to UK via courier. They packed it in a special case no problems.

Flybe allows you to pay for an extra seat for a cello, it's on their website. I'd certainly ring again to get a second opinion.

Only Flybe flies to Newcastle, ummmm.

Mosey. Flybe fly twin propellor planes and the overhead stowage is very small.

I've seen cellos strapped to seats before. There are various rules about it - no more than 1/3rd of the instrument must protrude above the seat, must be a window seat ect but they can be secured with extension seatbelts because they are rigid and have secure handles to put the belts through. A dress in a box would come under hand baggage and would not be able to be placed on a seat. It's a CAA rule.

I'll bet that whoever she bought the dress from has shipped dresses to wherever a wedding's taking place dozens of times. They'd be my first port of call.

You can get a direct train from Southampton to Newcastle. Which part of Northumberland are you? That's my neck of the woods, or at least it was until they invented the ghastly Tyne and Wear.
