I was interested in purchasing a mobile phone advertised on Amazon's website. I have used Amazon many times in the past for various items without difficulty and the items were sent from sellers based in UK, or WITHIN the EU. My query about the mobile phone is that the seller is based in Hong Kong and if i ordered it would i have to pay import duty and extra customs tax as it would be coming from a country OUTSIDE the EU. The seller just quotes the price and does not mention that the buyer may have to pay import tax.
Have any Answer Bank readers paid extra tax/import duty on items purchased from Amazon?

Not through Amazon but I have had to pay import duty on something I bought from China and I wasn't expecting it. It's a UK requirement so not the responsibility of a foreign seller to tell you (I think that's what I was told). I think Amazon now has loads of sellers a bit like ebay so I'd beware.
From Hong Kong! I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole!

I think you are both right, i will forget it. I will stick to my local provider even though the selection is limited. By the way Ratter15, i have no barge pole , maybe you could lend me one!!
There is a big difference between buying from Amazon or from an Amazon marketplace trader.

I have heard stories of fakes being supplied by traders, though you can be fairly confident on items supplied by Amazon themselves I believe.

Its not that i have no confidence i stuff made in China. After all, nearly all mobiles are made in China, including IPhones. I remember years ago we were brainwashed into thinking everything made in Japan was crap and now there is not one household that has not got something made in Japan. They took over the car industry and where have all our motor bikes gone?
China make great stuff, its the seller that i have questions about. Amazon do not strand over what their sellers sell so thats what my questions are about.
Also, trying to get in touch with anyone in Amazon is so time consuming that its just a waste of time.
