We wash all incoming fruit and vegetables in salted water, but lately our usual suppliers (Ocado/Waitrose) seem to have run low, and most of the stuff on the www is overpriced ‘gourmet’ stuff.

Anyone else experiencing difficulties?

Allen, Ocado/Waitrose is now Ocado/M & S.
Have you got a local corner shop you can get to?
Is the washing just a Covid thing Allen?
Fortnum and mason are much more suited to your socialist needs Allen.

a) We shop at both Ocado and Waitrose.

b) Nah, couldn’t get to the corner!

c) No, not a Covid thing - just never trusted those ‘pre-washed’ labels (which usually mean dunked in bleach).

Oh, Tora3, you know us so well.
Fair do. Thought it was a little extreme for Covid fears.

Mozz, then avert your eyes on shopping days.

EVERYTHING gets washed, or sprayed with bleach, and rewiped.

"We shop at both Ocado and Waitrose" - you mean that's where you send the staff?

Meh. I'm gonna die one day, if it's from eating a bleachy carrot, so be it.
Some veg marked 'prewashed' will get washed in a very mild solution of 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and 16.5% sodium chloride (NaCl; common salt). This is the same solution @ 1:80 dilution that is used to sterilise babies' feeding utensils, including baby bottles. Hardly going to kill you allen is it?

Those veg marked 'wash before consumption' can simply be washed in water. The really nasty things (pesticides and insecticides) are not so much ON the fruit/veg as IN them, as these products are systemic. The only way to avoid consuming these chemicals (all be it in minute quantities) is to eat organic produce.

My great-great-grandpa George was a butler near Hyde Park.

I think I’ve inherited his lariness.
What do you clean with bleach?
You are not trying hard enough.. go on Amazon and type in table salt. They have shed loads..

Bleach: packages and similar, where water washing would be inappropriate.

Amazon: your link is to a 50lb bag (not any more... once upon a time).

The salt we can't get is:

cheap salt, useful for cooking, table-salt, and washing!

A

(PS Amazon are just starting a 'shop at Morrisons' service, which looks possible, and they DO a cheap 1.5kg packet of cooking salt).
Asda sells 750g of table salt for 27p.
We sell it here cheap and have plenty of stock and am pretty sure all the other supermarkets here sell it to, even tho we have are firebrake in Wales and therefor a little bit of panic buying last week. Maybe its a London problem allen
