Lidl Too Good To Waste

This is a new anti-waste initiative by Lidl's. I just noticed it today. A massive box...grapes, apples, blueberries, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers...and more. All for £1.50!

They do this in France, pasta. We buy big boxes of faded stuff for a euro. Brilliant bargain and introduces one to new things we haven't bought before. Of course we are now stuck in Little England, but we have Lidl round the corner, so we'll check it out.

Thanks for your link, Pasta. I often find that I want to add a bit of onion to a recipe but I've not got one in the fridge. (Trudging to the local Co-op in the rain for one onion isn't something I like to do at the best of times but I'm even more reluctant to do so when I'm still officially meant to be shielding). Until I saw your link, I'd never thought of keeping chopped onion in my freezer!

Buen; why in the name of G would you keep an onion in the fridge? Do you live alone and not cook very often? I use onion and garlic every day. I'm too idle to chop onions and freeze them.

Almost snything can be frozen Chris. I've frozen roasted aubergine...great to just grab out of the freezer. I've also frozen grated cauli 'rice' without cooking.

I sometimes end up with half an onion or shallot in the fridge. Easy when cooking for one.

Yup!

If a buy an onion to, say, put it in a casserole (for one), a small amount of it goes in the casserole and the rest probably sits in a cupboard (in the hope that I might find a use for it) until it's no longer usable. Then, the day after I've thrown it out, I find that I want to cook something that needs onion again!

Now you mention it, Cashier, I vaguely remember seeing them but deciding that the packs are too big for me. (I've only got a tiny table-top freezer, so I try to avoid buying big packs of stuff that will be taking up space for months).

Buen; half the onion in the casserole, half of it in your salad (you do eat a salad with every meal, I hope). Or if not, then maybe a whole small onion in the stew. We all have our little ways. At least I cook for two, so it's a bit easier. Shallots are good; they're quite small.

Actually, I do buy bags of mixed leaf salad quite often, particularly if I'm eating a pasta dish, and I eat a lot of fruit (so I don't do too badly on the '5 a day' count really) but I'm just not a great lover of 'proper' salads.

They've been doing this a while - I looked & the boxes might work for families but I would be throwing most of it away.

Theres an app called Too good to go which lets you know of cheap food boxes, such as Lidls, from shops in your area. I've never managed to get one, they're long gone by the time I look!

Bought a box a few weeks ago for my son and his family. Kept a couple of things for myself. Great bargain and saves food going to landfill. Well done Lidl.
