Going to the office christmas party next Wednesday. We've been told that the dress code is smart casual. The party is being held in a wine bar and I was just wondering if someone could clarify exactly what is meant by 'smart casual'.

Thanks for your help!!

Smart jeans, not ripped and a sparkly top for a girl, nice shirt for a boy. Or a skirt and frilly top for a girl and trousers and polo shirt for a boy. Nothing too trendy or tarty.

Hi 'LostSheep' - you don't say if you are a lost ram or a lost ewe!!

From the male point of view, No T-shirts or round neck shirts and I would avoid Jeans. Casual slacks are good with open neck, collar shirt. If it is cool/cold I would be tempted into a lightweight, long sleeved sweater. Casual slip on shoes to finish the job and a slim wallet so that no odd bulges appear in the wrong place............

Also - definitely no trainers.

You could easily get away with smart jeans (no rips, patches etc) a really good white shirt and a formal jacket.

I know it might sound a bit 'Channel 4', but it works.

not too smart, not too causal.

id go for some smart jeans, nice looking shoes - not trainers and a shirt

On the basis that you are a man (I can't imagine a woman asking this question):

Personally, I'd stay away from jeans (smart or not). Open collar shirt ( I would say round neck okay). Shoes not trainers.

Really, make sure you are comfortable but don't dress scruffily
