Having worked on sites with 110v power tools is it possible to run these through ordinary 240v outlets or are the motors differently phased to allow for 110v input? If not could they be converted, or do I keep lugging the transformer around at home? Would be most grateful for an answer.

Correct, 110 volt kit is used on sites cause if you get a shock from a live 110 volt cable or appliance the voltage to earth is only 55 volts as the transformers are centre tapped so the voltage to earth is halved....

The easiest thing to do is buy battery kit, i.e. Makita or Dewalt....

240v mains will promptly burn out any 110v motor. There's no way the tool can be converted. Keep on lugging, I'm afraid.
