Having noticed the trend for today's school youngsters to wear the knots of their ties nearly to the waist, and their shirts sticking out their pants, it is little wonder that they say they look scruffy.

But the answer here is not to change their shirts and ties to the more leisurely polo shirt, but to instil some discipline back into the classroom.

What is wrong with the old way of students filing past the head at the beginning of the day? Anyone not adhering to the correct smart dress code, is punished by reporting to the head at the end of the day for the next week or so.

The message would soon sink in.

AOG...I am with you there.............but different generations with different priorities now.
Shirt and tie ideally with a Windsor knot!
My son's school have just introduced clip on ties to stop the odd fashion trend of large tie knots halfway down the chest.
David...."Half Windsor for me"..............Windsor seemed too "common"...;-)

From the school obviously Steve....My son's school has also introduced badged trousers from next school year, these are compulsory and can only be purchased directly from the school,of course that means they can charge what they like for them and we parents have no choice but to pay it.

You say, Windsor seemed too "common"

I very really see a correct "full Windsor" tied, :-)

And don't get me started on clip-on ties.

dancairo...well said.
Great idea dan

Do as I say or I'll hit you

Shall we introduce that for speeding motorists too or do you only approve of hitting children?

Daffy - I think there are some rules comming in or in outlawing the scam of school uniforms only being available from the school.

If you're in that position tell the school that you'll refer them to the OFT

jake...you have the habit of making one very good statement and then spoiling it with a subsequent bloody stupid one.
the onle problem with everyone filing past the headteacher is the sheer amount of time it would take in a lot of schools, in my high school, by no means the largest of all high schools, there were 360 people in my year alone, that made around 1800 pupils altogether, half the day would be lost!
Come to think of it Dan, Squad

Why limit it to Children? - Surely we should be permitted to beat our wives if they turn up scruffy?

I mean as long as the stick is no thicker than your thumb - let's not be silly about this!

Do you/ did you have children dan?

Did you beat them when you didn't like what they did?

Or is it just other people's children you want to see hit?
BTW I like you idea that getting beaten did you know harm

From where I'm sitting it turned you into rather a nasty violent character.

Glad you're not in the police any more - were you "weeded out"?
Personally, I think kids should be tidy and comfortable in their school uniform. Whilst they are forced into wearing ties they will always rebel - I did and that was back in the dark ages - and I went to a strict girls grammar school.

Polo shirts and slacks do not look scruffy and I applaud the schools that have changed their uniforms so that the children are dressed more practically and actually look better.

Anyway, I hate ties with a passion - what function do they perform?
It is my opinion that a smart uniform gives the pupil a sense of unity and pride in his/ her school and with the school badge as sense of esprit de corps. Also proficiency in sport rewarded by colours is some something to strive for.

Somehow, a school badge and colours for cricket etc, would, in my opinion, sit right on a polo necked shirt.
