i have just taken some gold to one of these shops for someone, there was a fine thin bracelet from argos and a fine necklace from a retail store, neither weighing much and nothing fancy, dorothy perkins or something like that, and got 32 quid for them, she said the one from the retail store cost her 5pound!you wouldn't expect that to be real gold would you??!it makes me think about buying some sale stuff from argos and getting it priced up!!there was some other things which she thought would have been real gold and they told me they were only gold plated but was bought as expensive xmas pressies??it doesn't seem to make sense!

Any jewellery that is old could have cost less to buy because the price of gold was lower at the time it was made. All they give you today is the scrap value of the gold. If you wanted to buy an identical piece of jewellery to the one you are selling it would cost you a lot more because you have to pay for the craftsman skill as well as the price of the gold.
They currently pay around £7.60/gram for your scrap gold.
I agree it would seem stupid to put it in an enevelope. What proof have you got if they say items you put in it weren't there? My daughters have just got over £500 & £400 for unwanted or broken gold items of jewellery from a local shop.
