MM Links July 2011 [Week 5]

Good Morning Everyone from the Ice Maiden,
I have mostly told you about the good things, parks, fresh fruit and veggies, lakes and sunshine. But there is a downside to all of that and it's called Winter. Although after the unnatural heat wave of this summer with temperatures reaching 50+C (including humidity factor) winter may be welcomed this year. We may not mind paying the piper as we usually have to do after a 'normal' summer as described to you in my previous posts.
In winter snow and ice abound and temperatures drop quickly into the low -20C's.
The first snowfall is always beautiful, pure and clean. We especially enjoy snow during the Christmas period, but as the months go on and the piles of snow that have been moved off the roads, parking lots etc., get higher and turn a dirty brown it's not very beautiful any more.
The worst month is February so we take our vacation. By that time we need a good dose of Vitamin D and to be reminded that the world isn't all a freezing wilderness.

When we lived in the Ottawa Valley it was just a short drive to the Rideau Canal in Ottawa which freezes solid in winter and creates the world's longest skating rink being approx five miles long. We would skate and then stop to eat a delicious pastry called Beaver Tails - actually shaped like beaver tails - sugary and sweet to give us some energy and served from stalls lining the canal.
Although most other rivers and lakes freeze over it is not recommended that one skate on them as the density of the ice is unknown and tragedy has occurred too often in the past.
As far as winter sports go we are merely spectators. Games are becoming rougher and less like sport. Witness the riots in Vancouver when our hockey team lost the Stanley Cup. It's only a game, but that doesn't seem to be the attitude of late. I have a picture in our den of a personal friend holding up that very same cup in the year her father's team won it, approx 15 years ago, and there was no rioting then by the losing side. Times change just like the weather.
But enough talk of weather and winter. It will be here soon enough.

I want to say before the Ice Maiden melts that I have really enjoyed these past five weeks I've shared with you all.
Crofter, aka My Friend Dave, used to say he thought it was a 'cultural' thing that we (Mr.O and Moi) didn't seem to pick the same words as the folks in the UK did. Judging by the scarcity of points during my reign and Gen2 having to go to my second and third choices most weeks, I believe that Dave was right about the different train of thought. When trying to choose my words I sometimes felt like I was trying to sneak the morning sunrise past the rooster. It was hard work trying to imagine what would fit with the lingo 'across the pond.'
I guess that next month it will be back to a certain MM losers' club for Mr. O and myself.
Thank you all for taking part and special thanks to Gen2 for all his help and advice. It gave me great confidence knowing that he was there and ready to catch me should I fall.
I leave you with regret but pass on my best wishes to whomever takes over the throne. Enjoy your time as setter. It's quite the experience.

According to normal practice, for the everyday running of MM, I shall follow crofter’s rule on word length, in that each of my pre-selected link words contains at least four letters and at most eight letters. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts!
Each of your selected link words may go in front of or behind my challenge word to make a new word or a well known phrase! The competition will officially close on Sunday Evening at 5.00pm, when Gen2 will declare my pre-selected words and then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. My set of four words to have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am.
