i'm trying to find an old friend.  i know their first name but forgot their surname, i also have an address they lived at 18 years ago.  is there any internet sites or librarys etc that will help me find the surname of who lived at this address.

You can check the electoral register for the year that you know they were there.  It is searchable by address and usually held at your nearest large library.
