This is based on a true event that just happened here.If you found 200,000 pounds in a backpack in a laneway, would you:

A. Hand it in to the police  B. Keep it C. Keep some of it?

Our guy kept it but in a stupid place (Under his desk in a bank!) and has been charged with "Steal by finding"!)

hand it in of course

I'd like to say that I'd hand it in but I suppose that if sthg like that happened to me I'd have a lot of active thoughts about what to do otherwise. But as that's never going to happen it doesn't really matter what I'd do, she says jocularly!

Have you seen the film with Billy Bob Thornton - "A Simple Plan" or read the book of the same name?

Why not be honest? I'd keep it unless there were clues as to the owner.  Over here if I handed it in - the police would only share it out anyway.
Oh, if you don't know, "A Simple Plan" is exactly that -they keep the money and everything goes very badly (if it didn't there wouldn't be a story, let"s face it).
I would keep it,leave it a year, give 1/2 to charity and then spend the rest, that way I won't feel guilty.

I certainly wouldn't keep some of it.

Most likely, I would hand it over to the police.

I would leave it where it was walk on and pretend I never saw it.

The sort of people who "loose" 200,000 in a laneway are not the sort of people you want to get involved with.

I do hope they never find out who your friend is

I'd hand it in ( and hope for a reward if owners traced).
If owners never traced would I get it all back? If I did i would give part to my children, part to church and go on holiday.
The temptation to keep it would definitely be there but I would be too scared to spend it incase it was fake or had been stolen in the first place, then I would get in trouble. Im sure there would be more reward (even if not the money) if you hand it in.

I'd hand it in. By being honest I may end up with a reward and I set a good example for my kids at the same time.

I know it sounds awful, but I would probably keep it.  But I can't actually say until I'm in that situation.  I would wait a long while before spending it though and of course, I would give a large amount to Cancer Research.

Hi Artful, I loved the book "A Simple Plan", didn't see the movie. I think the tempatation would be huge to at least dip in to it.
I'd check it to see if the serial numbers on the notes were consecutive (and therefore traceable), THEN make a decision ;-)

Not really! As jake-the-peg says, the sort of people who can "lose" that sort of cash in a backpack are not to be messed with. It's quite possibly counterfeit anyway, or may be the proceeds of a heist. If you were caught, you could be looking at a charge of being an accomplice to an armed robbery. How would you prove you had nothing to do with it? If someone died during that robbery, the charge could be even worse. Hand it in, you may help the crime investigation and get a reward.

Sometimes my imagination runs riot, you know ;-)
i would take it and wait to see if anything about police looking for it, and then i would stick it in the bank a few hundred every few days or so. different bacnks and accounts
