I'm planning to go to university in Manchester, but I've heard that it's one of the most dangerous cities in the UK. Is this true? What about Salford? Thanks.

I think it depends where abouts in Manchester you go and at what time of the day or night.  It is a fabulous shopping centre, really easy to get around by train or tram, one of my staff has been a student in Manchester travelling in from Wigan each day and has never had any problems.  I have travelled in for meetings and it has been ok.  There are lots of events on, hundreds of places for a night out.  I know there are about 3 University campus in the city and all in all as an occasional visiter I would say you will be lucky to be able to live in the City, if there is accomodation for students, which I believe there is as they have done up some of the old warehouses and offices near Piccadilly as far as I can tell. Good luck.
I've lived here for several years now and I don't think it's more dangerous than any other big city.  Of course it has rough areas like anywhere else  - places like Moss Side and Hulme have a bit of a reputation!  I work in Salford and I used to live there too and i did feel a bit less safe there than I do now living in the south of the city.  A lot of the student accommodation for the Manchester unis is pretty central though, so you shouldn't have too many problems.  I'd recommend coming up for a visit if you can and see how you feel about the place.

There are worse places than Manchester - Nottingham apparently has the highest rate of gun crime in the country and London is a regular on Crimewatch UK!

Just have your wits about you as there are plenty of young scrotes more than happy to relieve you of your mobile phone and cash, especially around the south of the city (Rusholme, Fallowfield, Withington), but having said that don't be afraid as Manchester is no worse than any other big metropolis. And it's fab!

No its OK K and you will have a good time.

I have never felt unsafe anywhere in Manchester within reason - Longsight is a bit of a no-no, but the centre is OK. I admit that there could be a problem - a weeny one - with youngsters smacking other youngsters over the head directly they've been to the cash machine - and taking their cash. But I am 15st mainly fat.

Most of the students take digs, houses, house-shares in the Didsbury area. Even if Man U unites with UMIST there will still be four universities in Manchester.

Lots of clubs and pubs - to continue your studies at, and discuss Hegel and marx with all the others cheek by jowl drinking beer. I mean its OK - my niece had a good time here - with hardly a day sober.....

Very friendly - and outstandingly honest - someone sent me a cheque book of mine he had found in a street. Straightforward as well - if somethhting is not OK and you say OK, they will say no this is not OK, rather than agree weakly and then spending the next month whining about it.....
