I think that you could have phrased you question better, but there is a matter of concern here:

It undoubtedly happens, but 'as a routine' sounds straight out of The Daily Mail Bumper Book of Facts.
Watched a TV programme the other day about the effects of this now on the population and the fact that a huge proportion of Chinese young men now will have no chance of ever finding a partner.  There is something about this in Steve's link.  The consequences of trying to control nature!

That's horrendous.

So what does the Catholic church preach to all of the catholic parents (there are plenty in China)? Don't have sex?

I'd heard of this happening but it's not something you really think about as being 'real', is it? Horrific. The mind boggles..

Erm this has been a problem in other cultures.

If you have a VERY good muslim friend, ask him if their is a condemnation in Q. - Bury not the little girls. Straight from the mouth of God as indeed the whole book is. And of course there would not be a declaration against it, if it werent a problem in the tribes he was trying to convert......(in 632 ofc ourse -some time ago I agree)

I was a problem among arabs during the pre-islamic period referred to as Jalhiliya or "ignorance".  Some fatehers even bragging about doing it.  The practice of infanticide is not limited to any period of time or people or culture.  It is also practiced in the indo-pak region and was done during roman times.

There are a number of reasons why it is practiced such as economic as girls are seen as costing more, and will be eventually give to another family in marriage which is often costly.  whereas sons are supposed care for parent until death.

I would be too judgmental as I can see many parents doing it for pleasure. I just thank god I or my parent have never had to be in such a position.  The one child policy surely does not help the situation.

*It, sorry at the start of my last post.

The problem also must be more widespread as the Quran being the last testament, was sent for all people and all times. Not a specific people e.g. arabs as previous books were.

*wouldn't and *can't in the last paragraph also.

now excuse me while I enrol on a english evening class.

Obviously it does happen and it's shocking, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it routine as this would implied that it is accepted in China. Actually, it is illegal in China just as it is here.
