We have read much about the effects of passive smoking, seen smoking banned in pubs and public places etc, now they are thinking of passing laws regarding to smoking in one's car if there are children present.
As a non smoker I am not saying that I disagree with these measures, but what I do disagree with is the hypocritical anti-smoking hysteria shown by some, when they think nothing of driving around in their diesel fuelled vehicles.

/// A diesel fuelled vehicle is certainly more of a necessity than puffing on cigarettes which is f no benefit to man nor beast! Silly comparison!! ///
Not a silly comparison as you have impolitely put, both are a health hazard, but diesel fumes more so.
A diesel fuelled vehicle is not a necessity there are more safer fuels available.

What I think is ridiculous is the comparison between smoking, a social habit, and transport, a necessity. Ant yet this this attempt to equate the two comes up again and again and again.
Since the two are entirely different, hypocrisy doesn't come into it.
Also banning smoking (in some places only) at worst "wastes" a packet of fags or two. Ban diesel vehicles and the owner victims effectively have their transport stolen from them, and has to get rid of the vehicle 'to boot', which is an appalling thing to suggest.
And that is before we even start of discussion the pros of diesel anyway.
In the event someone could put forward an effective case for phasing diesel vehicles out, then that would be the correct course of action; not beat up members of the public with draconian edicts. Authorities need no encouragement to push the public that pay their salaries, around. They seem to think it their right & duty already; as they who pays the piper are told what tune they must call.

Just phase them out for private vehicles, 25 years ago diesel was for trucks and farm vehicles. just hike the price for private cars and it'll die naturally when the manufacturers stop building them. However this is not a comparable situation. It's patently obvious that passive smoking is no where near as dangerous as diesel partuculates but the whole smoking thing is about the unpleasantness for all but the smoker. I don't care if it's harmful, I care that it stinks and get's into my clothes and hair and is generally disgusting. I don't care that being in a room with a smoker is like smoking a zillionth of a cigarette, the fact is that I don't want to have to smell and inhale their filth. Smokers had it their own way for centuries and proved themselves to be selfish abusers of the rest of us, they forced society to put their house in order for them.
