I visited St Louis 2 years ago for my husband’s graduation. I found it clean and safe. As the graduation provided us with a chance to really get to know the local people, we really felt we saw ‘real’ America rather than the tourist side of the country. People were very friendly, hospitable and welcoming towards us. As with most US cities, the central part is mostly commercial rather than retail, so not a huge amount to do and you’ll need to venture to a mall for eating and shopping. Public transport is a little limited (but again clean and safe) so a car is recommended. The arch is definitely worth a visit and baseball is a big event when it’s on.
