Interesting to see that the left-wing papers have chose to show a completely different slant on the Notting Hill Carnival, than the right wing press appears to have.

But in a completely opposite way than one would normally expect, while the Guardian and the Mirror have reported on the crime, the Daily Mail and the Telegraph have chosen to show the other side.

if you happen to look at your own Guardian link, you'll notice that at the bottom they also provide links to stories from earlier years, in which they've also reported on crime.

Perhaps it's your expectations that need adjusting?

I remember several months ago there was to be an EDL march in Dudley and I believe another post was dedicated to a far right group who wished to stage a White Pride march.
Cue howls of outrage as to the few hundred police officers taken off crime prevention duties to police these naughty boy's activities.
It was a non event. Either the demos didn't go ahead or they passed quietly without the AFL's interference.
I read of no such outrage on AB from the usual suspects that 13,000 police officers were employed to police this stab/drug /crime fest.
The usual."well 300 arrests out of one million carnival goers is a small statistic". Some might think so whilst sitting at home on answerbank especially some who think they are an authority on speaking for the event but have never attended it.
Some who had a knife between their ribs might wish they had never attended it and ended up fighting for their life.

This is about the Guardian and the Mirror actually reporting on the crime, while the Mail and the Telegraph chose not to.

The Guardian article I read managed to cover both the good and bad aspects.
Where you have one million plus people gathered together some crime is inevitable sadly

The aftermath "tradition" of the Notting Hill crime fest was to clear the station yard of police vehicles at Notting Hill police station. Members of the public who had attended were invited to inspect the mountain of purses,wallets and handbags the following week to try and recover their stolen property.
There used to be several hundred if not over 1,000 items.Each theft would have been a potential arrestable offence you could add on to the 400 or so actual hands on arrests made. That paints a different picture to the so called small amount of reported crime in the press.

Not sure if your question was directed at aog or me.
I believe that if the carnival must go ahead then it should be a ticket only event confined within the boundaries of Hyde Park. That way the majority of Londoners (the other 7.54 million) will not be inconvenienced by the minority one million.
Underground stations are closed. Roads are closed. Residents are trapped within their own homes.Some residents board up their property and go elsewhere for the W/E only to return to find their basement areas awash with urine, faeces and syringes plus a mountain of rubbish that the council do not pick up from private property.A great deal of private property is damaged during this "fun" event. No fun for the residents or the other Londoners who are hampered by this cultural extravaganza which is no part of London. Kingston Jamaica. Yes. Not West Kensington.

The annual Winter Wonderland event in Hyde Park attracts 2.5 million visitors a year. I wonder how many arrests are made there? Had a cursory google for it but found nothing. Would be interesting to compare figures against the Notting Hill carnival.

Perhaps because if you cancelled it, you would have to cancel Glastonbury, Pride, Bestival, V, Reading / Leeds, Creamfields and every public event where any crime takes place (including all football matches).

Some people focus their attention on the Carnival, whilst ignoring the crime figures for other events.
