Nice to see that the carnival everybody loves went off quite peacefully.

Just three men were stabbed, two police officers injured, 261 arrests, several men injured, one sustaining a serious stab wound and eight others also received knife wounds, six men arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and a female police officer attacked.

The Metropolitan Police also issued Section 60 and Section 60AA Orders, giving police the power to stop and search across the two-day Carnival late last night in response to the stabbings, but strangely enough they were only put in place from 7pm on Monday until 2am Tuesday, why weren't they in place before, during and after the carnival?

Nice though to see a change from the obligatory black lady wears policeman's helmet photo.

I spent one hundreth of a second guessing from the the OP would be - and I was right!

I would like to know the answer to this too. Talk about after the horse has bolted....

Instead of using experiences/wording of the media and graphs/figures/statistics wouldn't it have been better to have went to the carnival yourself and done a "hands on" experience of the carnival yourself to video and narrate that "Yes" the carnival is exactly how you thought it would be and you're glad you've never went previously or "No" It wasn't as bad as you thought and you're glad that you went?

This would make your claims/fears very much more credible.

I had many friends who went and none of them were stabbed/assaulted/robbed and all had a great time and said they'd be back again next year as millions will be.

I suppose he's wondering, like many people, why such an event was ever allowed to gain hold and increase its level of disruption in such an unsuitable area. He may also be wondering why one with such levels of arrests for offences involving violence - many of them serious - is still countenanced.

Still, it could have been worse; at least he lashed down with rain yesterday probably keeping the numbers down. Matters may have got really nasty if it had been a hot, sultry night.

I agree New Judge. Slightly off topic and a little while ago but tough policing and bad weather seemed to have stopped this thuggish lot though they still managed to start fighting amongst themselves which doesn't surprise me the slightest.

Only that this event is policed with the softest of kid gloves, ag. As was pointed out in a question a few days ago, many offences concerning vendors of food and drink go unchecked so best go easy on the other stuff as well.

Food and drink violations? Isn't that the job for the council H&S department? With police being called if violence or the fear of violence or public order offences are being committed?

Where they out checking food/drink stands? Do you know that they weren't?

I was there and the worst that happened to me was getting soaked by the rain.

First time in ages I can remember it raining so badly on August Bank Holiday.


But back to the OP. I don't think any of us are in a position to answer about the Section 60 and Section 60AA Orders (unless there's a Met officer on AB).

In terms of the NHC's history, this has been one of the worst in terms of the numbers of arrests...but I still don't think that this alone should deprive London of the event - that would be to accept that the criminal element can dictate to the law-abiding majority.

This is from a BBC report. Admittedly, it's from 2011, but I've got little reason to believe much has changed.

I wonder whether (despite what others may imply), that a major reason why the NHC continues, is because it's such a massive cash cow!

Anyway, this is what the report states:

As a worldwide event, only Rio de Janeiro's carnival in Brazil ranks ahead of Notting Hill in size.

According to the London Development Agency, it contributes up to £93m a year to the city's economy and supports the equivalent of 3,000 full-time jobs.


Young volunteers are keen to help assemble the carnival costumes
Visitors spend tens of millions of pounds buying food and drink from the carnival's 250 licensed trading sites, while music producers, clothing designers, merchandisers and security companies are among others who benefit.

The carnival also attracts an estimated 90,000 foreign tourists, who helped boost last year's attendance to more than a million.
