Put this in News but it has either been overlooked or ignored so posting again in Chatterbank.
Not sure if this has already been posted but I was very sorry to read of the death of author William McIlvanney yesterday. Loved his detective Laidlaw.
Ian Rankin sums it up far better than I could:
"Rebus author Ian Rankin described his death as "dreadful news".
He said: "A truly inspired and inspiring author and an absolute gent."
Monsieur 'Tartan Noir' apparently, a lot of his inspiration derived from across the Pond, apparently. Don't know his work in depth, though recognise the name 'Laidlaw' and it's not the rugby family......
