Lord Lucan was officially confirmed dead today, and his son can now hold the title. As there is doubt as to Lucans innocense of his Nannys murder and wifes attempted murder, should the title die with him. Why should someone benefit from the title of a discredited peer. Opinions?

how is he benefitting? The problem with having a hereditary system is that you can't just skip over if you don't like the person
Why should you visit the sins of the father on the son?
I wouldn't have thought that carrying the title Lord Lucan was particularly desirable, he was a bit useless in the Crimea too.
Be patient barney. The EU will banish the upper house and the hereditary system. Replacing it with one of their own choosing.

they should get rid of hereditary peers full stop - its an antiquated system of self entitlement, and many peers are not fit to make the laws of this county.
The 3rd Earl was at the Charge of the Light Brigade. McDonald Fraser uses the joke in Flashman at the Charge that (this) Lord Lucan was never around to give instruction.
No. Innocent or guilty, discredited or not, the title remains.
Must have happened many times previously.
or spelling too, that rules you out of becoming a peer, barney......

well i never had a public school education, so i think i can be let off for that
So barney, your question is not really concerned with Lord Lucan but the system.
Lord Prescott didn't either - and plenty more of the nobs as well.....
Question Author
well yes it does concern both, whether a hereditary title should be taken away from a discredited peer, and then the whole hereditary peerage system.
Neither did I but I do try spell correctly and I am happy to have been educated where I was.
What happens if he now turns up ?

As long as he goes on to ride Shergar in the Grand National I don't care. My bet at 25,000/1 is up.
