I loved getting The Broons and Oor Wullie books handed down from the boy next door. Bought them for my children too.
Happy memories when I see Goodgoalies avatars. :-)
I saw The Sunday Post in neighbours houses occasionally, Barry.
I blame living in Little Scotland, Chris. Might just treat myself to a few for the memories.
There was a sketch on one of the sketch shows - Naked Video or Absolutely or somesuch - which was just brilliant. Elaine C Smith played the bairn, and it was centred around Hen Broom "comin' oot". "He's just done seven days hard with Francis Gay." Hilarious.
As a kid (even as an adult) !! Christmas wasn't Christmas unless you got the Broons, or the Oor Wullie annuals.
If you got the Broons one year, it was Oor Wullie the next, and so on....
I was always very careful with my annuals when I was a kid, and looked after them well. Sadly they were left in a box (under the floor) in a house in Glasgow that I used to live in.
Sadly, I had no way of retrieving them when I left that address. Still wonder to this day who got them !!
Me as well gness. Think there could have been as many as 30 pristine assorted annuals in that box, dating from 1967 to 1977.
Keep watching the "cash in the attic" type programmes on tv (praying) !! that I don't hear "found this lot under the floor) !!!
I never knew The Broons as a kid. For those that did though, and who've now got half an hour to spare, here's a BBC Scotland tribute, which was screened on 31 December 2005:
Isn't it funny (pun intended) how people's sense of humour can be so diverse. My Scottish Sister-in-law bought me a Broon's book for Xmas some years ago, and I didn't find it funny at all.
Now that would make a good poll, something on the lines of "Which of the following do you find (a) Very funny, (b) Funny (c) Slightly funny (d) Boring (e) Awful"
The Broons
Basil Fawlty
The Vicar of Dibley
Only Fools & Horses
Blackadder
Viz
Snoopy
The Far Side
Dilbert
and so on - lots more candidates, including comedians of course.
Chris! Wow! Thank you. Got round to watching after a busy day. So interesting.
Now, do I buy some for Dave as a surprise or does he buy some for me as a surprise? :-)
