What is the answer rollergirl? Probably is to do with cathedrals, but London appears twice, although it does have more than one cathedral. It can't be age or height of spire. How about length of nave? with no.1 being Winchester?

Thanks for all the suggestions, but I am still no wiser. If I were to take a guess it would be Salisbury.

According to my book of TopTen lists - the answer is Salisbury due to its height . Salisbury 404 ', London (St Paul's) 364' Liverpool (Anglican) 331', Norwich 320' Coventry 300' and Chichester 277. Liverpool (the Catholic one) replaces Chichester as no 6 but then the list carries on after Chichester with : 7 - London (Westminster RC) 273'.8- Lincoln, 271',9- Lichfield 258' . No 10 in the book is Truro at 250'. Hope this helps

Sorry rollergirl I thought you already knew the answer - silly me. Sounds like dml is correct, not height of spire, just height, and the question dates before Liverpool's RC cathedral.
