I'm going up to London with a friend at the end April, to see a show, and we want to stay the night. We'd like somewhere quite central but that isn't too expensive, does anyone have any thoughts? thanks

buckingham palace does a good bed breakfast i hear

It really depends on your level of tolerance. South of the river will probably be cheaper (always was) and just find somewhere near transport. To the north Kings Cross is dire but probably cheaper than anywhere else that central, and going east towards Hackney and Highbury may be as well.

West London is posh and pricey, and if you want to go out a bit further Kilburn or Willesden have better parts if you know where to look and plenty of trains.

check with the university of london halls of residence ast canterbury hall gardens to see if they have any accomodation, during the breaks they let the student rooms at about 25 per night for b and b
Hotels on Gower St, (top of Covent Garden and spitting distance to the Theatres of the West End) do quite reasonable b&b from about 40 per night or so.
Check on lastminute.com, they always have some fantastic deals. I just booked a 4* hotel for my friends, and it was only 50 a night, and in central London.
As londongirl says, lastminute.com is good, but there's a good choice of cheap hotels in the Bayswater area, only about ten to fifteen minutes train ride from central London.

Try the Edward Lear Hotel, 30 Seymour St, W1

(google it for info and website)

A stones throw from Oxford St and Marble Arch, very reasonable and friendly.

I was a receptionist there for summer of 1978, and still think it's one of Londons best kept secrets!

Paddington. The whole area is full of bed and breakfasts, as well as couple of hotels. All main bus routes go through there. 10 min away from Oxford Street, 5 min away from Bayswater, Hyde Park. 15 min away from Notting Hill and Portobello. Bakerloo line goes through Paddington and takes you straight to Centre. It is also on Cirlce/District and Hammersmith lines, so the World is your oyster.
