I know someone's first name and address and I would like to find out the surname (they owe a friend of mine money and I am just being a nosey busybody). Tried a search on the Land Registry on line, paid 2, but the house appears to be owned by a company. How do I go about checking the electoral register, or is there a better or alternative way?

Thank you I tried all of those but no good when all I have is the first name and address.
Your friend could probably make a County Court claim using just the first name and the address. Anyone can use any surname so you could also make one up for them. The important thing is you have the address and if they ignore it thinking it's not them then you can get judgement by default and send the bailiff round.
You could also try Companies House to find out the directors names to match the first name.

Well you could try phoning the local Council tax office and saying something like "I want to check on my council tax payments because I think there might be a mistake, I thought I was down for direct debit .. (or something like that) and then say 'its 24 Acacia Drive, Wapping' or whatever and they might say - and what is the name .. and you say "Suzie .." you might have it in my maiden name, which is Jones" or is it in my married name ... and they might say 'oh we have Simpson' or something .. if it all goes pear shaped just hang up and pretend you got cut off. Or you could say "what name have you got down because I keep getting Council tax bills for Joe Bloggs ... and then they say, oh no we have got Suzie Jones .. is that you ... yes you say .. anyway you get my drift ...
