There's the 'protest' poet, Benjamin Zephaniah.

Not sure how you'd feel about Johnny Cash. There's also Malcolm X (although the authenticity of Alex Hailey's biography of him is much disputed).

i've heard john mcvicar has done some stuff, not sure what though.

he started as a common no-good criminal and became a minor celeb whereas manyof the others named are celebs who have done wrong, so there may be a different angle there
