I added it to the search engine in AB and it didn't know. I asked Jeeves and he shrugged his shoulders. I emailed all my mates and they could not reply. I searched Altavista, Google, Yellow Pages, the phone book, Argos shopping catalogue, the Holy bible, the guiness book of records, a copy of Womens Weekly, and a till receipt i got from Tescos on Saturday, but none could furnish me with the answer. It goes along the lines of: "a bean - a half a bean - a bean and a half - a bean and a half and a half a bean". My Mum used to say this to me - not able to check it out now, sadly.

Mathematically it does add up; {one bean) ,(two beans), (a bean and half) and (half a bean) and it has a certain rhythm to it.. Anybody knows that! :-)

What it amounted to Lennon was a silly riddle that appealed mainly to very small children, that's all. The question was "Do you know how many beans make 5?" and of course the child doesn't - but that's the whole point, because then Mum or Dad or whoever, would reply in the rhythmic way in which I gave the answer. This would be repeated many times, almost in the same manner as Nursery Rhymes. Even though it might sound a bit silly these nonsense 'bits and pieces' were a great aid to reading. Does this make any sense?

Correct Cetti - though the precise answer to the question would be "How many beans make 5 what?" (Because if the question was 5 casseroles = a lot of beans)

I am interested by all the responses to be honest in that you've all made attempts to answer the question which i didn't expect. What do i mean? well it was my (and lucylastic, and a few others possibly?) opinion that AB was going downhill a bit and turning into a chatsite where people were hurling insults at each other rather than attempt to answer the questions. In this case i could have asked any other nonsensical question, the whole point was to see whether it started a catfight, or whether the question would attempt to be answered. As has been seen you lot have all surprised me by attempting the answer and so have restored my faith in AB as a source of knowledge. 4 stars for everyone ( a new category for rating answers) and well done! cheers. In other words you set everybody up as guinea pigs just to prove a point - how patronising can you get? I think an apology is in order, because as far as I'm concerned your little plan has back fired - I am the most patient of people, and until now have never answered anyone in anger, preferring to ignore, but what you've done has made me see red!!! BTW there is no 'what' after the Q that you asked. I'm really disappointed in you Darth, so come on, let the force give you strength to humble yourself!!

That surprised you all, didn't it? It's the first and hopefully the last time I blow my top. I've always treated everyone with the greatest respect and patience - is it too much to expect the same? It is neither humorous or clever to treat unsuspecting people as pawns in some game to prove some imagined point.

In all seriousness, if I want to know the real answer to a question is this where I'd look? When half of the replies start with "Well, I don't know much about..." If that's the case don't bother typing a reply. Oh forgot, you're only here for a chat! Sorry.

Don't get me wrong, it makes funny reading - I think people pretend to be as dumb as they appear (especially the sk8er boyz txtheads) - I only ever asked one real question and a colleague answered it properly. Best that was offered from AB was misconceptions, no facts.

tomr appears to have a different reason for coming to this site from most. Each to his (or her) own - within reason, please. This *is* a site to post questions and answers. If it's friendly enough for people to add comments and stimulate other thoughts or debate, so much the better. If tomr's question wasn't answered, but s/he keeps coming back, well then we must be doing something right.
