why do some people who spend the time to read these questions think it is funny or smart to send unhelpful comments when the whole point of this site is to get factual answers?
Because people are people, and some of the time we like to 'play'. On other occasions, we have a (semi) relevant statement or comment to make and want to do it in an amusing way. That's the 'net for you. It's not something that bothers me, personally, as half the time they make me laugh, and the other half I simply scan over them. It doesn't take long :o)
You are making the assumption that "the whole point of this site is to get factual answers". I would guess that that is one of the purposes of the site but it is also here to entertain. I enjoy some of the funny, smart and unhelpful comments and I think it helps to make the whole thing more alive..
I have no deire to take issue with your remarks but I must say that you could be considered to be wide of the mark when you talk about the **whole point** of this site. On the site help page there are the following words; **allows opportunity for debate ...... open up to full discussions rather than simple questions and answers ....... discuss issues .... or argue**. Each of us will have his or her own opinion about what we would prefer to see in both the questions and answers. There will always be the mickey takers; those that think they are funny; those that are funny; the downright ignorant; the ill informed and many others. Questions like yours are posted regularly on the site as a quick scan through the archives will show you. Personally I enjoy most of the repartee, and often join in myself. I have no doubt that will not please everybody. The Editor appears to delete anything that is objectionable but also suggests regularly that we ignore reponses that we don't like. I tend to agree with that.
I also agree with everyone. Sometimes it makes you smile to see the funny responses and just as many people post silly questions as they do answers. Its simple if you don't like it ignore it, thats what makes answerbank fun seeing everyones opinion.
I've always imagined the rule of thumb on here was, in the first instance people respond seriously to the question, and once two or three decent answers have been posted.. the floor is open to resident wags...;) But you'll notice, should someone post a really serious question or concern say about their health, seldom does anyone make fun of this.
I agree with DavidUK.. humour in the right places here adds a nice touch of life to what could be a rather dull information disseminating service :)
