Isn't the time long overdue that certain restrictions are put on these mobility scooters?
1/ They should not be allowed to anyone, only persons that cannot get about in any other way. i.e.(doctors certificate needed)
2/ Persons who do not hold a driving licence, should be required to take a driving test to prove their ability to handle a scooter.
3/ All scooters should be safety examined each year.
But let us not only target mobility scooter users, Third Party Insurance, and road safety tests should be mandatory for pedal cyclists also.

yes helen, i do agree with AOG on this. I use them probbaly on a weekly basis from shopmobility, and in places like sainsbury's and tesco. It makes perfect sense to me to have insurance as they have "fast" acceleration and have seen a few people out of control on them before. In no place ive ever borrowed one from has anyone asked me if i know how to drive it or if i feel confident doing so. They are heavy and could easily knock down someone hale and hearty, let alone vulnerable. I have also seen people use them in my local shopmobility where if i'm being honest, the only "disability" they seem to have is that they are fat and lazy. Of course, i don't actually know these people, so they may well ahve angina, or some other hidden disability
No comment to make but some great mobility scooters here, especially the pimped model and the caterpillar track model.

For your information these are not ramblings, just subjects I add so others have the enjoyment of adding their 2 pennies worth.
So perhaps rather than start off by adding your snide remarks, perhaps you could assure us all that you are quite proficient in using one of these scooters, seeing that you don't normally use one?

I have been advised to get one as my mobility is very limited, I struggle to walk 100yds. I won't get one though as I would feel really stupid at my age (42) riding about on/in it. I also have the problem that we live in a terraced house and have to step up from the pavement to enter the house,I could never get a scooter up the step and into our tiny hallway.
I do know of a woman who has a scooter because she is overweight, she has no other disability that couldn't be cured by her losing the weight. Of course because she always uses the scooter and never walks she just keeps getting fatter and fatter. She has a habit of knocking into people in our village and most now know to look out for her and move swiftly out of her path.
