Did you notice how uninterested Prince Philip was towards the crowds clapping and wishing him well, outside Church today ? I even noticed someone in a wheelchair waiting outside church. What is it about the Royal Family that makes people queue for hours in the cold and wet when certain members can't even be bothered to look at them ?

Not *every* 90 year old is in a care home!
If they are independent, then they sure as hell are not senile!

I really don't think he is going through the motions when he carries out 300 royal engagements a year.
welsh, no idea what sort of work you do but I hazard a guess it isn't with active, able and independent 90 year olds.
One of my neighbours is in his 90s and there is no stopping him - totally independent and cuts the hedges and lawns for his neighbours because they are too busy working to do it.
His wife is of a similar age and she too is fit and well in every aspect.
My Mum is 88 next month and she is CERTAINLY on the ball - much better than I am, very sharp, astute, and with a memory like an elephant, she has us all running around her like she is the Queen! She is definitely not senile but is fantastic for her age.
The Queen being 5 years younger at 85, Is she senile too?

jem
boxtops, pleased to hear that, so do you never see any senile dementia patients then at 90 years old?...if you don't, then that is very strange|!.....the ones I visit around that age all have a degree of dementia................
He did smile and wave.

If you got the chance to meet him you would realise he is a great bloke with a lot of wit and wisdom, he has done well to keep himself in the background as that is where he is supposed to be when the Queen is around! Trouble is the gutter press and those that want to have a moan will always find something wrong with his attitude or behaviour.

It is not in his job description to shake the hands of all those who want to follow him and annoy him all the time, I am sure if you had to put up with all he has done in his life you would want a quiet life now and again.
Welsh my father-in-law worked in the local mental asylum...........but he never assumed all people were mad.
Welsh, no I don't personally, not in my line of work - but I am not pretending that it's not there, I know too well that dementia is a major issue - so please don't think I'm belittling the problem, only that it certainly doesn't affect everyone of a certain age.

I have the greatest respect for people like you and ratter who work with people with dementia and Alzheimer's - I have heard Barbara Pointon MBE speak twice now and each time, I learned so much from her about the condition and how best family and carers can interreact with those people.

Prince Philip and the Queen don't display any signs - that's what I'm getting at.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who are senile at 90 but there are plenty who are not. Mr grandmother was 98 when she died and her mind was clear to the end as was my mother's and she died at 100 and was not senile. Now me on the otherhand ...
I'm interested then Welshy, at what age are we considered "senile". What is your cut off?
craft! I'm not saying that he's mad!..........and boxtops, sorry, but he may well have dementia, he will just be doing what he has always done!.....supporting the Queen!.........
Is it in his job description to have it off with call girls, & have several affairs behind the Queens back? She put up with it for years & swept it under the carpet. They still may be together but She has hardly spoken to him in years.
I don't like the man myself.

I now understand the meaning of 'hitting a brick wall'...............

barmaid, senility can start at any age, normally over 40, but in the elderly, most are affected in their 80s!.....and as the years go on, the problem increases, very few are unaffected!..........
I'm getting worried now................I'm the youngest on our street so all my neighbours must have alzheimers.
craft, its a proven fact that 50 per cent of the population will suffer dementia!.........
NO RH, but 50 odd years ago it was all in the papers & mags it was quite q talking point then by my parents & people. All of a sudden it was all hushed up & it was very noticable, people talked about it for a long time.
I remember the Hoo-Hah! and have never forgotten.
There must be others who remember...
We saw him shooting last Weds but he wasn't his usual self :-(
phew...............at least we're down to 50% now.
