I disapprove of fur being worn when the animal was merely killed for its pelt. I don't feel it is morally to kill for that reason.

I have no problems with using all of an animal killed for food, as then it was killed as part of the food chain which seems acceptable to me as long as there was no suffering.

Some years back someone bought me a fur hat, like the Russians are seen to wear. Never felt I wanted to wear it though. Must be in a cupboard somewhere.
No strong feelings either .
I've got a lovely real fur coat hanging around here which I inherited from an ancient aunt via my late ma in law .
Last year in that freezing winter I was very tempted to wear it .The animal it was made from was probably killed donkeys years before PETA started their campaign . Mr S. bought me a faux fur for Christmas but it looks so real I've not worn it yet and it hasn't been really cold this winter .
Mind you I don't suppose we get many red paint slingers in my little neck of the woods :)
Well, unless you're happy to go vegetarian, there's no good reason to eat the meat and discard the skins.
Sorry, that was to Evian.
I cant stand looking at it never mind wearing it
I have several fur coats that I have inherited from various relatives.
I am really torn between wearing them or not. They are beautiful and very warm. And the animals they came from are a very long time dead now...at least 50 years.
(IMHO synthetic substitutes do not look anything like as good and are not as warm.)
I cannot bring myself to throw them out, because I know that their previous owners saved for years to be able to buy them and wore them with such pride.
On the few occasions that I have worn them, they felt luxurious and glamorous. Cannot say I ever had any adverse reaction from anyone.
Sorry, I'm being thick. I don't get what you mean.

As I already said, I'm torn. Just trying to see both sides.
My OH has an aged Fur Coat inherited from a very aged relative, which is best described as 'shabby chic', (the coat that is), I have no problem with that but would have if it was a modern fur where the doner animals were bred just for their pelt.
I have two entirely polar viewpoints on this, the first being that if you are prepared to enslave and kill an animal for food purposes then there is no conflict in enslaving and killing an animal for fur, as no-one HAS to eat meat to survive. The second is that in an ideal I would like to see both practices stopped, but the world is not ideal- therefore in order not to be a hypocrite I have no serious moral obligation to fur wearing PROVIDING the animal has a decent quality of life prior to a humane death.
If I lived somewhere really cold eg Alaska, then I'm pretty sure I would wear fur. However I don't, so I wouldn't wear it. But a girl I work with got a mink waistcoat for Christmas. That I don't understand. A coat would keep you really warm, but a waistcoat?
Fur is a renewable resource. If you wear fur clothes, and they wear out, you can breed some more. On the other hand, man-made fibres come from oil or coal, which are resources which are rapidly running out.
How "green" can you be ?
I have a few vintage items......

Shouldnt be killed for fur...and i wouldnt buy "new fur" xx
As a meat eater, For me it depends whether the animal has been killed for food. In that case it would be almost irresponsible not to use as much of it as possible. Having ended its life for one purpose, you almost have a duty to give that death as much meaning as you can.
I'm probably not expressing that very well but hopefully you know what I mean.

However, the sight of baby seals being clubbed to death just for their pelts is a truly sickening and disturbing one.
Similarly, rhinos or elephants being killed just for their horns and tusks, it's just wrong.
Not for me, leave the animals alone, they have done nothing to us.
I've lost my fur above quite some moons ago, I would much prefer to have it back on.
You could make lampshades from human skin. From the Unter menschen perhaps ?
evian- if cowhide was not made into leather, then all the skins of cows etc after the meat has been taken, would be burned... that is wasteful... if you must kill an animal then at least do it some justice by not binning half of it.

with fur the skin is removed an the meat discarded! in some countries they strip the animals while still alive... then leave the skinned animal to suffer and die...

it is a disgusting an uneccesary trade

i have been veggie for about 20 years so ideally id like to see no fur or leather, suede, sheepskin etc AT ALL... but as the animal is already dead, and that wont stop, i can see why using their skins makes sense...

animals skins are ONLY acceptable as a byproduct of the food industry.
This is clearly a complex issue but I understand now. It is OK to wear the skin of an animal so long as the hair is removed.
But that's sort of one of the points I was making Joko.

It's ok to use leather because we are killing the cows to eat them. So if I wanted a tiger skin coat it would be ok as long as I ate the tiger meat too.
