Wearing of Braces...

I occasionaly wear braces to hold my trousers up as an alternative to a belt, My Mum is constantly slating me..like, 'you look like an old man in those', 'They're the opposite of cool', 'they are NOT fashionable' etc; I completely disagree and say who is the judge of that then? So opinions gratefully received.

If trousers fit properly there is no need for either belt or braces.

Watched a programme some time ago. Young man went to Saville Row to be measured for his first ever made to measure suit. He asked about a belt and there were raised eyebrows all round. Apparently you should use braces to allow the trousers to hang properly. Very modern ones shown.

When I was in the RAF we had braces for our best uniform and belts for work uniform. As the Saville row tailors implied, trousers hang better with braces. Then again, perhaps being in the RAF wasn't cool.

Depending on the rest of your style.. I would say that they are pretty fashionable atm in certain places. It goes with the vintage, quirky, almost preppy kind of look.

Yes, maggie, Savile Row tailors would still prefer customers to have braces, because it's easier to make the trousers hang well than with adjusters but expect them, or the younger ones at least, to want the adjusters . Thirty years ago, they still insisted that every suit was made for braces; the only concession was that you did not have to have the trousers high at the back; they would allow you, just, to have something approaching belt height as a waistband.

If you are happy with them, then wear them, if not sure..try looking in
young fashion magazines, and see whats going, or even try googling trends.
